If your movie collection is a rapidly growing one, it’s wise to take some time off and organise it according to Title, and may be even director, actors, script writers, etc.
There is a simple, easy-to-use, sleek and intuitive DVD catalog program called All My Movies by Bolide Software.
Add your movies to the database:
The easiest way to add a new movie is to go to Movie > Add, from the menu or press [Insert]. One the empty movie card, fill in the fields for almost all items that you can think of associating, with a movie in your collection.
Do not get overwhelmed by the amount of details, you don’t have to fill everything in. Just enter the name of the movie in ‘Original Title’ text box and press [Enter]. The program will automatically find all the information about it from online movie databases, which is set to IMDb by default. You can change the default database by clicking on the small down arrow adjacent to the Original Title Field and selecting another.
We searched for Watchmen and it brought up all the results with Watchmen in the title. Now, you just have to click on the movie you intend to select/choose and the program will download detailed information about the movie, including the cover image, description and ratings in a few seconds (depending on the speed of your Internet connection). Click OK to add it to your library or click on ‘Next Movie’ if you want to add more.
You might also have a digitally stored collection of movies. To add them to your library, just go to Movie > Add from File, from the menu. Browse to the location where your movie is stored, select the movie file and click on Open. The software will automatically read all the technical information stored with the file and add it the movie card. Not all files have additional details stored with them expect probably the codecs used, bitrate, video length and file size. You can also store screenshots of the movie in your collection by going to the Screenshots tab, finding the perfect frame that reminds you of the movie and clicking on ‘Save Screenshot.’
The best part about adding movies this way is that the movie can be started from inside your “All My Movies” collection by using the button shown in the screenshot.
You can also add DVDs similarly by selecting Movie > Add DVD instead.
Your movies:
Browsing and searching your collection with All My Movies is easy, fast and fun. It displays the information of your movies in the right pane of the main window, while the left pane contains the list of your movies. You can change the layout of the display by going to View > HTML template in the menu and trying out different layouts.
The list of movies on the left pane can also be configured in several ways from the View in Menu bar or by going to Tools > Preferences and adding more columns from the ‘Display Area’ tab. You can also group your movies by Genre, year or movies from the same Director. For this, right-click in the left pane and select the requried grouping from the ‘Group Movies By’ list. This feature is very helpful when deciding what movie to watch. You can simply see the genres available in your movie collection, select one according to your mood and then chose a movie from it. Alternatively, if you can’t decide on any movie, just press [F8] and the program will suggest you a random movie to watch.
More information:
For more information on actors, directors, script writers, etc. just click on their name. You will get the option to either ‘Show only movies which feature them’ or Search more details about the respective person. You can also access this feature by clicking on Directories > Names which consists of a list of all the people from your entire movie collection with their details which includes their photo, personal details, biography and entire Filmography if that’s available on the movie database. After you’ve searched for their details and added them to the Names databases, their photo, birth date and where they belong from will appear when your mouse pointer hovers over their name.
Exporting databases:
Probably the best feature of this software is the ability to export your database into special formats so that you can carry your collection around and view it on other computers. We recommned the MS Excel and HTML formats for best compatibility. Go to Tools and select the chosen Export to format.
When you use the Export to HTML option you get to select a layout and then the program exports your entire move collection in a way ready to be uploaded over the internet and accessed like a web-page by your friends who may wish to see your catalogue and exchange movies. You can even print your movie collection by exporting it to an excel spreadsheet as quick reference for times when you don’t have access to your computer.
