BSNL Indian Broadband Service Provider Offers 24Mbps Speed, Fastest In India

To find good internet speed in India is a matter of concern. But BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) has become the fastest Internet speed provider in India today by offering new plan that will touch speed up to 24Mbps.

The 24Mbps speed provided by BSNL is the fastest compared to Bharti Airtel which provides only 16Mbps, that is 8Mbps more than Bharti Airtel.

BSNL will offer high speed broadband service through the high speed digital subscriber loop (VDSL) technology.

But the internet speed is nothing compared to speed offered developed countries like Japan and Korea offering 45Mbps and 60Mbps respectively.

Prior to this speed launch by BSNL, they used to offer maximum speed up to 8 Mbps only, that is a large shift. Infact VDSL will help speeds to go up to 52Mbps.

This news may sound good to those subscribers who are stationed 500 meter from BSNL’s broadband exchange nodes. Only those who come close to 500 meters can avail this offer, but those further away cannot. But in future, the offer will be expanded.

BSNL connection of 24 Mbps and 16 Mbps connections comes with an exorbitantly high price tag of Rs. 9,999 and Rs. 4,999 respectively.

Although BSNL had previously stated of offering 500 Mbps speeds, nothing much has been done about it. But this boast of 24Mbps may be the stepping stone for huge success in India. Infact India is pegged to hit a meagre number of 20 million broadband connection in the next 5 years which means that such high speeds with such expensive tags rarely have a ready market out there just yet.

LG India Releases New ‘Ice Cream’ Clamshell Phone

Indian market will witness new LG ‘Ice Cream’ phone KF350, as LG launches it in India. The phone is basically targetted towards Indian women, as Women’s day is scheduled to be celebrated on March 8th 2010.

Samsung Introduces New Jet 2 Smartphone In India

Samsung will be launching their latest touch-screen handset known as Samsung Jet 2 in India soon.

Samsung’s Jet 2 phone is bit advanced compared to their earlier version Samsung Jet S8000 when it comes to slight software modifications. There are quite a few additions, like it comes with multi media features like 5 MP camera, SRS and DNSe sound effect, XviD and DivX video support. Jet 2 also combines intelligent functional and user-friendly interface.

When it comes to display, Samsung Jet 2 has 16M WVGA AMOLED display (3.1″) offers the most vivid and colorful touch experience and its 800MHz application processor delivers breathtaking speed and stunning performance.

Small wonder

The Gigabyte Monitor Integrated Box T3140 is a small form factor system with a black bodied chassis. It has a faciliy to attach a monitor on the chassis. This helps in saving space for an external monitor stand. The chassis is made of strong metal and the build is quite sturdy. The glossy front panel has the power button alongwith the two USB ports and the speaker and microphone jacks.

On opening the chassis with the help of thumb screws on the rear end, we notice that it is neatly compartmentalized for optimum usage of space. There is a 160W Gigabyte power supply for the entire cabinet on the left hand side and space for a Mini-ITX Motherboard on the right. Heatsink has to be chosen keeping the limited height of the chassis in mind. A 6 cm fan is located on the right hand side with space for a slim ODD and a 3.5-inch HDD.

The monitor stand can be set up on top of the chassis which has two grooves for the stand. It is screwed from behind to provide additional stability to the stand. There is a hinge lock system to raise the stand. It is done by applying pressure on the stand and then moving the lock according to the direction indicated on it. Once the stand is upright, the VESA standard slot can be inserted into the upper most projection of the stand to which and LCD monitor can be attached with the help of four screws.

This is an ideal product for small offices where space is at a premium. At Rs. 3,999 plus taxes, it is a decent buy.

Anti-virus Suites Tips And Tricks

Almost all security suites have anti-spyware, a firewall andoher features, but some minor features take the cake. It’s these that we shall focus on. We’ll compare the features of some fo the most popular anti-virus packages namely Avast, AVG, Norton, Kaspersky and TrendMicro.

Boot time scan:
A boot time scan lets you scan your full HDD even before Windows starts. The main advantage of this over a normal scan is that most dormant viruses and malware that aren’t detected easily during a normal scan are easily found out and removed. Another advantage is that boot-time scan bypasses the Windows file system drivers and uses direct disk access that results in lower scan time and detection of the background root-kits. In Avast, open the main Avast user Interface, right-click and select Schedule boot-time scan from the context menu that appears. Next time you restart your computer, Avast will perform a full system boot-time scan.

With AVG, you can change the settings in the Options menu. The scanner option has the ability to modify the settings. Kaspersky does not have a boot time feature.

Screensaver mode:
Many security suites allow you to run a full system scan whenever the computer is idle. For a lot of systems, a full system scan can slow down your system. In Avast, for example, you can schedule a full system scan whenever your comuputer is idle by using the anti-viurs screensaver feature. It can even be run over your normal screen saver. Whenever your computer is idle for the time that the screensaver is set to come in, Avast will start scanning for viruses and pause immediately once you come back to your computer. To enable this, go to your screensaver properties window and select Avast! Antivirus from the list.

In other software suites, it may not be called Screen-saver mode, Instead, like Norton, it is referred to as Idle Time Scanning. Norton can perform scheduled scans when your PC is idle if the “Only run at Idle Time” option is selected. Select the Settings > Task Scheduling > Idle Time option.

Other systems optimise their scanning to ensure that normal functioning is not disturbed while scanning. Features such as Fast Scan and optimised background scan are prevalent.

Silent mode:
Most security suites have realised the importance of disabling notifications so as to improve the user experience. Except TrendMicro, all the security suites we reviewed for features had an option, either as Silent Mode or Gaming mode or a similar name.

Avast has it, in its main user interface. In Kaspersky, right-click on the Kaspersky icon on the taskbar and click on Settings > Gaming Profile. Click on enable Gaming Profile. You have the option to disable scans, disable updates, or instead of notification, just take action automatically. Kaspersky chooses the best course of actions based on the threat rating and previous choices.

Norton has both options – Full Screen Dectection (Gaming mode) and a Silent Mode. It activates automatically when you watch full screen applications. Similarly, Silent Mode is a manual operation to do the same. you can do so by going to Settings > Administrative Settings. In the Silent Mode Settings, set the Silent Mode to On. In the Turn on Silent Mode Box that appears, select the duration from a drop-down list.

AVG Firewall includes a “Game Mode”. This can be set under Settings. Alternatively, click on Firewall from the Main Control Center and enable Game Mode.

Anti-spam:
If you use webmail services such as Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail, chances are email is secure. However, if you’re using a client such as Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird, you have to independently scan your mail for viruses. This feature all security suites have. The new Avast v5, goes one up by having a fully integrated anti-spam feature.

In all security suites, you have the option of customizing the sensitivity level of your detector. Go to Real Time Shields or Email Protector, or Mail Scanner or whatever it is called in your antiviurs program, go to settings. Chances are, to specify the level of customisation, you may have to got to Expert Settings or Advanced Settings.

The same sort of sensitivity specification is not restricted to the Email scanner. All Fire-walls also have the same feature (some even have a program specific option).

Auto USB detect:
Though the manual scan option is available to scan specific folder files, some security suites can automatically detect when and external drive is plugged in. Some can even erase malware without notifications. If your anti-viurs doesn’t have this function, it’s a good practice to scan your removable media for malware. In AVG, you can go to Tools > Advanced Settings > Scans > Removable Device Scan. Tick the checkbox to Automatically Heal/Remove Infections. Kaspersky and TrendMicro have the same feature enabled.

P2P Protection:

Frequent downloads from unknown sources using a torrent tracker or a P2P file sharing program often pose a high risk. The security suite monitors all the recognised P2P programs installed for downloads and checks the files as they are downloaded (real-time). Avast has a P2P shield under its list of real-time shields. You can go to Expert Settings and change the list of programs that should be monitored. Kaspersky also has a P2P/File Sharing monitor.

Is this the iPhone Killer?

The first thing that strikes you about HTC Hero is the unconventional design. The base of Hero comes with a 15 degree angle tilt in it’s from factor. Bevelled edges give a good grip and the tilt helps in grasping the phone easily. It comes with the HTC Sense technology which takes user experience to the next level.

The 3.2 inch screen has a capacitive touch sensor which is very smooth. Hero has as many as seven home screens which can be customized according to the user’s choice. The scenes mode of the phone allows the user to program certain scenes according to his/her preference, thus taking personalization one step further.

The idea to integrate various environments of the contact like phone details, messaging, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter onto one screen, prevent the user from toggling between different applications thus saving a lot of time.

The phone comes with a 5 MP auto-focus camera. The shutter button is the trackball which is not very impressive. Music output is OK but FM radio is absent.

For a smartphone with great features we felt that Hero is priced quite steep at Rs 31,990.

AMD Fusion Processor To challenge Intel

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) plans to bring out their new fusion processor soon and has divulged some details regarding the processor. The new processor may challenge all the Intel processors out there.

Code-named Llano, the Fusion processor is expected to be released in 2011; meanwhile the speed, power and consumptions tests and few samples may be shipped during the first quarter of 2010.

Presently Intel is in the limelight enjoying their success with Intel’s Core i7 processors. Intel has been using 45 nanometer graphics chip and memory controller inside the same chip package as a two-core Core processor implemented using 32 nanometer processes but AMD plans to integrate single-chip CPU/GPU combination.

Although Intel has overtaken AMD when it comes of integrating CPU and GPU already, but AMD’s first hybrid part will be something to take a look at. Llano may possibly integrate a DX11 class GPU derived from the Evergreen line-up, which we can expect to see from Intel’s Sandy Bridge. But we may not find Intel offering DX11 graphics with Sandy Bridge and mostly likely to see AMD having advantage over them when it comes to GPU performance.

Llano will feature four Phenom II derived cores along with on-die GPU and almost the entire processor shall be built on a Global Foundries 32nm process. Also one can expect to see Power Gating for reduced idle power consumption by powering down inactive cores to improve efficiency basically seen in Intel.

If all four CPU cores in the Llano chip are operating at their highest clock frequency, the overall TDP could be between 10 watts and 100 watts, without the graphics processor. Many of AMD’s Turion laptop chips have a TDP of around 35 watts, with ultraportable Neo chips drawing half the amount of power.

Processing speed for Llano can be expected at over 3GHz. Each core may get paired with 1MB of L2 cache. It will use DDR3 memory.

AMD is planning to bring the future technology closer with its innovative edge with fusion. It is not just coming together of graphic technology and CPU on a single chip; it’s much more than that. AMD is all about creating next generation technology, not just standing on top something but innovation at its best.

Now it to be seen whether AMD can live up to the hype created by their new processor can deliver the goods well enough.

Switchable Graphic (Optimus) Technology From NVIDIA For Laptops

A new technology from NVIDIA known as NVIDIA Optimus technology has been unveiled. The new Optimus technology switches between integrated graphics (for saving on battery life) and discrete graphics (for 3D-intensive tasks) in a laptop, running a given application. That means it automatically chooses the best graphics for the given application. The Optimus technology offered by NVIDIA directs the process happening in the laptop through the most efficient processor for the job and on the move extends the life of the battery up to 2 times compared to similarly configured systems equipped with discrete graphics processors. The NVIDIA discrete GPU is used while playing 3D games, running videos, or using GPU compute applications, web surfing and for emailing.

The Optimus technology gives durable long life to battery and provides great performance. NVIDIA claims that they are the first one to make the switch automatically, with no disruption in the use of the laptop.

NVIDIA explained the process saying “Users can now experience the full performance benefits of a discrete GPU with the battery life of an integrated graphics solution. Nvidia Optimus automatically, instantaneously, and seamlessly optimizes the notebook to offer the best performance or best battery life depending on the application.”

Also Rene Haas, the general manager of notebook products at NVIDIA said “Consumers no longer have to choose whether they want great graphics performance or sustained battery life. NVIDIA Optimus gives them both — great performance, great battery life and it simply works.”

In other words, it’s an experience similar to hybrid car, which automatically switches between its electric and gas-powered engines, depending on the work it does.

Basically NVIDIA is planning to extent its hand to offer automated technology for system flexibility without major sacrifices in battery life. Optimus shuts down the graphic card when not in use.

Dr. Jon Peddie, President of Jon Peddie Research, a pioneer of the graphics industry and a leading analyst said “The genius of NVIDIA Optimus is in its simplicity. One can surf the web and get great battery life and when one needs the extra horsepower for applications like Adobe Flash 10.1, Optimus automatically switches to the more powerful NVIDIA GPU.”

Switchable graphic concept has been around for a while, but with new Optimus technology automated feature can deliver a lot of good to people who have been waiting for this.

Prior to the release of Optimus technology, laptops with switchable graphics come with both a discrete graphics solution and integrated graphics, even users could switch between the two depending on the task. But the switching from one to the other needed the users to reboot and logging out of the computer or at least a long screen flicker. But Optimus technology is automated; here Optimus determines when to activate the discrete NVIDIA GPU without any user intervention. Current switchable graphics systems feed both chips into a MUX which then controls which one is providing the display and controls the graphics drivers for that operating system. Optimus takes a different approach by instead treating the GPU like a co-processor and routing the discrete graphics feed through the IGP. When the discrete graphics power is needed, the GPU renders the image and then places it in the frame buffer, effectively overwriting the poorer image created by the IGP. This approach means that the operating system can almost instantly switch between the two graphics processors with no graphical interference apparent to the user.

And Haas also said “Switchable graphics is an expensive feature to put in the box, but actually, most people aren’t using it,” explaining that people who has this feature are not familiar with the settings required for specific applications and they even forget which setting they had recently used.

However, the first laptop that will be using this feature would be Asus UL50vf, which is scheduled to be announced on Tuesday. The laptop from ASUS will be priced at $869.

“We don’t expect anybody not to use this technology — it’s just too straightforward,” said Hass.

NVIDIA Company plans to incorporate the Optimus technology from netbooks to gamming notebooks. Optimus is designed for different processors in mind. It will run on next generation’s Ion and Geforce M products, also Green Goblin’s upcoming Geforce 200M and 300 GPUs. The Intel’s Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors will be supported as well. Furthermore even Penryn Core 2 Duo and Pine Trail Atom N4xx chips will be included.
