Mozilla Updates Thurderbird With Critical Bug Fix

Mozilla has fixed a bug in Thunderbird 3 and addressing three others. The critical fix affects the Windows, Mac and Linux version of Thunderbird 3 Release Candidate 2. Previous version sometimes hangs on shutdown, consume too much memory and close all IMAP connections.

The other fixes in this version enable downloading new messages automatically by default for POP3 accounts, label the default theme as version 2.0, and fixes the “download more dictionaries” option, which had been failing to open properly.

Although there is delay in the release of Thunderbird 3, the beta versions and release candidates works better than Thunderbird 2.

Thunderbird 3 RC 1 Released Before Final Release

Thunderbird 3 Release Candidate 1 has been issued by Mozilla as a preview release of the next major version of Thunderbird and it is being made for testing purposes only.

Thunderbird 3 is based on the Gecko 1.9.1.5 platform including some major re-architecting to provide improved performance, stability, web compatibility, and code simplification and sustainability.

There are over 100 changes in this release, many laying the groundwork for future changes.

New Search with Advanced Filtering Tools
User Experience Improvements

A more elaborate search option to locate specific messages. People can employ a variety of methods to sift the wheat from the chaff.
An e-mail archive a la Google’s Gmail. Rather than filing every message in a folder, an organizational technique that can be hard to maintain with high volumes of messages, people can move them out of the inbox into the archive where search can find them later.
A streamlined interface that cleans up the toolbar and moves some of its functions to the frame around e-mail messages.
A new plug-in system designed to be easier to use to replicate some of the success of the Firefox browser. The browser, by the way, is built in so plug-ins can use it.
A tabbed interface that can reduce clutter of e-mails, e-mail folders, and other tasks. A tab can, for example, house a version of Yahoo’s online calendar.
An easier process to set up new e-mail accounts. The software has preset settings for several e-mail services.
“Smart folders” that can be customized in a variety of ways. For example, users with multiple e-mail accounts can create a smart folder that provides a unified inbox for all the accounts.

FoxTab: Cool Firefox Addon

Think of it as Windows Aero/Linux’s Compiz/Mac’s Expose in your browser. You can preview ant then open all your tabs via this extension in various 3D Views. You can select from six different views to display the tabs.

One interesting and very useful feature is you can switch to Foxtab view (if you have multiple windows open with multiple tabs in each of them) and it will show all the tabs from all the Windows for easy switching in full 3D glory.

If you find yourself frequently working with more than 20 tabs, some of which where opened a few hours before and have difficulty in remembering what is there in what, this extension should significantly reduce your neural processing load. Delete All Duplicate Unwanted Bookmarks With CheckPlaces Firefox Add-on

CheckPlaces 1.6.3, a firefox addon, checks your bookmarks are valid and the pages still exist. Also checks for duplicates and for empty folders and can restore missing favicons.

The extension is extremely configurable, so you can choose what you want it to check for—if you have duplicate bookmarks on purpose, for example, you can have it just check for dead links and empty folders. You can also choose to individually exclude specific bookmarks from the check, if, for example, you think you may have unwanted duplicates but want it to ignore duplicates you made on purpose. It can even load favicons for websites you may have imported, but haven’t visited yet.

After you select your options and run the check, a window will appear summarizing any issues you may have. From this window, you can look in each category (failed pages, duplicates, empty folders, etc.) and pick which bookmarks you want to delete, or just delete all bookmarks in that category. You can also choose to exclude certain bookmarks on this list from future checks, so you don’t have to worry about singling them out anymore.

It’s an very useful add-on and it’s pretty simple to use.

Mozilla Releases Firefox 3.6 Beta 3 With 90 Fixes

Mozilla released their 3rd Beta version of Firefox 3.6 with 90 plus fixes. Although there is nothing much to look into those 90 fixes, there are quite few things you need to notice.

According to Mozillalinks, noteable features are:

A new API will now allow add-on developers access Firefox’s geolocation features.
As expected, tab previews on Windows 7 taskbar has been pulled back. This is a real disappointment: there will be no support at all for some of Windows 7’s most welcomed features: jump lists, download progress in the task bar (a la IE8), and now no tab previews.
In the security/stability front, the Firefox components directory is now locked down, which means no third party provider will be able to write to Firefox’s components folder.
The extensions.checkCompatibility preference becomes less relaxed. In the past, it has been abused by users as a way to force incompatible extensions to work with newer Firefox versions. The preference is still there but it will have to be more explicit. For example to force them to work with Firefox 3.6, you wll have to add extensions.checkCompatibility.3.6 and set it to false. For future versions you will need to set extensions.checkCompatibility.3.7 to false and so on.

Bugs Fixed With Update To Version 3.5.4 In Firefox

Mozilla has updated their firefox browser to version 3.5.4 for Windows, Mac and Linux. According to Mozilla bug report three important bugs have been fixed for the all OS versions which include Windows, Mac and Linux. While the Mac and Windows gets one low priority bug fixed.

The critical bug addresses crashes in the GIF decoder that was not present in version 3.5.3 and the Windows bug fixes a security runtime issue and the Mac bug fixes an HTML parser error.

But as per Christopher Blizzard, the Mozilla Evangelist says that “Crasher in some image-handling code that wasn’t security-related, just annoying to a lot of users.
