Screenless marvel

On first glance, one may be excused for thinking the Cowon iAudio E2 audio player is a bottle opener. The Circle + Square design of Cowon E2 Audio player is minimalistic but striking, Screenless audio players come with the most basic features, but the E2 goes a little further than that.

It comes with a 3.5 mm audio jack. This jack is also used for data transfer via a 3.5 mm to USB cable which is also bundled. As many as eight BBE audio modes are voiced out by a female voice to keep you engaged. Pressing this button longer enbales the shuffle on/off mode. Sound quality is crisp but it does end to screech at maximum volumes in certian modes. It supports MP3, FLAC, OGG, WMA and WAV audio formats. A big plus is the quick charging time of under two hours. It lasts for a good 8 to 10 hours on a single charge. A big negative is the absence of the ability to skip folders. So if your have many songs then be prepared for exercising your fingers. FM radio is not available.

At Rs 3,600, it is priced similarly to the 4 GB iPod Shuffle that has a similar feature set.

Small wonder

The Gigabyte Monitor Integrated Box T3140 is a small form factor system with a black bodied chassis. It has a faciliy to attach a monitor on the chassis. This helps in saving space for an external monitor stand. The chassis is made of strong metal and the build is quite sturdy. The glossy front panel has the power button alongwith the two USB ports and the speaker and microphone jacks.

On opening the chassis with the help of thumb screws on the rear end, we notice that it is neatly compartmentalized for optimum usage of space. There is a 160W Gigabyte power supply for the entire cabinet on the left hand side and space for a Mini-ITX Motherboard on the right. Heatsink has to be chosen keeping the limited height of the chassis in mind. A 6 cm fan is located on the right hand side with space for a slim ODD and a 3.5-inch HDD.

The monitor stand can be set up on top of the chassis which has two grooves for the stand. It is screwed from behind to provide additional stability to the stand. There is a hinge lock system to raise the stand. It is done by applying pressure on the stand and then moving the lock according to the direction indicated on it. Once the stand is upright, the VESA standard slot can be inserted into the upper most projection of the stand to which and LCD monitor can be attached with the help of four screws.

This is an ideal product for small offices where space is at a premium. At Rs. 3,999 plus taxes, it is a decent buy.

Is this the iPhone Killer?

The first thing that strikes you about HTC Hero is the unconventional design. The base of Hero comes with a 15 degree angle tilt in it’s from factor. Bevelled edges give a good grip and the tilt helps in grasping the phone easily. It comes with the HTC Sense technology which takes user experience to the next level.

The 3.2 inch screen has a capacitive touch sensor which is very smooth. Hero has as many as seven home screens which can be customized according to the user’s choice. The scenes mode of the phone allows the user to program certain scenes according to his/her preference, thus taking personalization one step further.

The idea to integrate various environments of the contact like phone details, messaging, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter onto one screen, prevent the user from toggling between different applications thus saving a lot of time.

The phone comes with a 5 MP auto-focus camera. The shutter button is the trackball which is not very impressive. Music output is OK but FM radio is absent.

For a smartphone with great features we felt that Hero is priced quite steep at Rs 31,990.

Quivering palm

Razer is the one behind the very fancy looking Belkin n52te gaming controller. The design is simple – a set of keys in front of an anti-bacterial palmrest. It comes with a D-pad like on other game controllers. The console is comfortable but the spacebar key is positioned at the extreme right and reaching ti with ones thumb is a bit of a problem; which is a pain while playing intensive FPS games such as Counter-Strike, Quake 3 etc. The D-pad makes for an interesting utility especially in RTS games where you need to pan the scene around.

The drivers allow a good level of customisation and keys can be mapped as well as assigned macro functions. There’s even the polling rate setting like on a high-performance gaming mouse. If done right, this is something that can be used for browsing or controlling a media centre software.

The Belkin n52te makes good sense for a gaming enthusiast. However, Rs. 3878 is a little too pricey when most full-fledged gaming keyboards with customisable keys can be bought a similar amount. This controller is unique, however, and is definitely going to grab people’s attention at a LAN party.

A multi-purpose NAS

Synology’s DS410J is one of the coolest products to come around for those who love to download or have loads of unmanageable data.

The DS410j is a NAS without drive i.e. an enclosure with four SATA bays. Indicators at the front for the drive and network status are present. Installation of the drives is very simple. Two USB ports are also available for external storage drives.

The DS410j boasts of a wide variety of features – everything from Windows file-sharing to web hosting, torrent and eDonkey client. Firmware upgrading is possible. Media can be streamed to any device that supports flash using a browser. Users and usergroups can be created and each one given privileges and quotas if required.

We recorded a stable 11.7 MB/s read and 9.5 MB/s write speeds between the device and a PC on a 100 Mbps network.

We would’ve loved to recommend this to anyone having a good unlimited broadband but the Rs. 32,500 price tag is way out of bounds. A more affordable sub-Rs. 15,000 would have been more suitable.

Gesture gaming on your cellphone!

With the Yari U100i, Sony Ericsson has brought gesture gaming on the mobile platform. A tiny camera located in the top of the screen on Sony Ericsson Yari acts as an interface to enhance the gesture gaming facility on the phone. However, the overall gaming experience leaves a lot to be desired.

The phone has an all black body with the slider of the same colour with a 2.4 inch screen. Yari has the standard Sony Ericsson Java UI. The keypad is not that great as it is very annoying while texting.

The Sony Ericsson Yari U100i is a high end camera phone featuring a 5 megapixel camera with many features and has an accelerometer sensor.

The music output of the phone is quite decent, but do not expect a Walkman series like performance. The Styles option is very impressive giving the user the option to select skins like the gramophone or LP cassette player.

Conversations are another interesting feature of the U100i which allows threaded texting. Yari integrates social networking in the phone with dedicated applications for Facebook, YouTube and Blogger.

For Rs. 16,950 we feel it’s decently priced as there is no other phone in the market with as many wonderful features.

Smaller than its name

It’s not very often that a flash drive garners admiration but the Super Stick Mini was passed around quite a bit. The concept of carrying around up to 16 GB (15 GB formatted actually) of data in so compact a form was tempting. This drive is super compact; in fact it’ll fit just about anywhere, and can easily be carried in a wallet inconspicuously. It ships with a small lanyard and a rubberized pouch that will protect it from sharp impacts. There is no cap, and the USB contacts are on the outer body itself, meaning this drive is actually water proof despite, it not having any rubber in its outer frame. Thanks to the extremely small form, it feels sturdy, but the lack of any sort of rubberized protection means you won’t want to bend it unnecessarily.

Transfer speeds were good for read operations but very mediocre for writes. Compared to our chart topper the Data Traveler HyperX 8 GB from Kington, which managed a whopping 13.81 MBps, this one just about, managed 2.83 MBps – this would be a poor show normally, but this isn’t meant as a high performance drive. Moreover, its performance was better than the PNY Micro Attache 8 GB, which is of a similar form factor, so kudos to the Super Stick Mini.

At a price of Rs. 1,450, it strikes a very sweet deal for a relatively large capacity in such a tiny footprint. Highly recommended, though we wish for an identical looking, faster, 64 GB one in the near future.
