Google has New Feature for Gmail: Gmail-SMS chat

Posted on 12 December 2008

Google has added a new feature to its Gmail list. The feature will let you text message to others mobile phones.

As for now the feature is only available in the United States for now.

And in order to use it, you must first enable it through Gmail Labs, then you can initiate SMS-based instant message chats by typing in a phone number in the chat box on the left of Gmail page.

A return phone number from the 406 area code will be delievered to the one’s who receives the SMS message from the service which will look like this, “G0O.”

Each pairing uses a unique phone number, so a person receiving messages can store a the 406 phone number on his or her phone for future use to communicate with that specific person.
