Zotack Mag HTPC Review

Posted on 12 January 2010

We’re testing a log of LCDs and we are very aware of the lack of media playback devices for them. Building a HTPC can be a little annoying when you’re looking for the right chassis and other components. ZOTAC’s MAG is their first PC that is perfect for such needs.

The desktop comes with just the PC – it’s compact, designed well and looks pretty. It runs an Intel Atom processor with NVIDIA’s Ion platform. There’s a 160 GB laptop hard drive in it and even Wi-Fi 80211n connectivity

The scores from the benchmarks aren’t extraordinary either – graphics performance is decent. Doom 3 can run at an average framerate of 27.4 fps on 800 x 600 at medium detail and PCMark05’s overall score is 2447. The case gets pretty hot while running intensive applications.

Being an Ion based platform isn’t enough to run HD – you need to configure some of your software properly. Once that’s done, 1080p is a breeze. That said, it’s perfect as a HTPC. If you use heavy HTPC software, the processing power of the CPU itself isn’t sufficient at times.

At Rs. 17,500, it will be a good purchase over any other dedicated media playback device. You only need to setup the operating system and the software for it. Ideally, we see this as a full fledged computer that sits next to your TV accessing streaming media content wirelessly over your home network. We wish it came with bundled wireless keyboard and mouse though.
